and it comes as the pair hits the campaign trail and their opponent, former president trump, sparks new controversy over his visit to what many consider hallowed ground at arlington national cemetery. this morning, the harris campaign is on day two of its bus tour through battleground georgia. >> we wanted to come by just to let you know that our country is counting on you. >> reporter: a new set of fox news polls showing harris and former president trump neck and neck in georgia. like previous polls, the results all within the margin of error, also show a razor-thin race in other battleground states. the trump campaign, meanwhile, defending its visit this week to arlington national cemetery, after being criticized for politicizing hallowed ground. >> what a horrible day it was. >> the campaign had posted this highlight video on tiktok. showing mr. trump laying a wreath in honor of the service member killed at the abbygate bombing in afghanistan three years ago and posing with some of their family members. >> it's not disney world.

it's arlington national cemetery. >> reporter: part of the dispute, a reported altercation between campaign and cemetery staff over photographs being taken at the site. the trump campaign says an arlington staffer decided to physically block members of president trump's team during a very solemn ceremony. a cemetery spokesperson points out that federal law prohibits political campaign or election-related activities within army national military cemeteries. four military family members praised their interactions at the ceremony with staff and mr. trump, telling nbc news, they did not witness an altercation. kelly barnett's son, marine staff sergeant taylor hoover died at abbygate. she invited the former president to arlington. >> trump's team was great, arlington's team was great. they were both respectful to us. >> reporter: for its part, the harris campaign is calling it a sad episode. adding the former president has a history of demeanoring and degrading military service members. though the vice president herself has not commented, mr. trump's running mate, jd vance, had some choice words.

>> she wants to yell at donald trump because he showed up. she can -- she can go to hell. >> reporter: the harris campaign is holding a rally later today in savannah, georgia. and it's announced a battleground blitz for this upcoming labor day, craig. >> lots of time being spent there in georgia, gabe. what does this tour down there in georgia, what does it tell us? what does it signal about how important the harris campaign sees that particular state to winning in november? >> reporter: well, georgia is crucial, craig. the vice president is courting rural and suburban voters in the southeast part of the state, where democratic presidential candidates have rarely gone in the past. the idea is to chip away at former president trump's lead there. harris won't win outright in some of those red areas, but if she can cut into republican's margins there, even a little bit, that could help her take the state overall. look for her to use a similar strategy in other key swing states, like pennsylvania and north carolina, craig. >> all right. gabe gutierrez for us there at the white house. gabe, thank you. meantime, the fbi is now releasing new information surrounding the assassination attempt against former president trump. and while investigators have

learned a lot about the shooting and the gunman, many unanswered questions remain. nbc's ryan nobles joins us with that story. ryan, good morning. >> sheinelle, good morning. and since that shooting, the director of the secret service has resigned and multiple officials have been put on leave in what the agency has called a mission failure. the fbi has found no evidence that thomas crooks was working with anyone else, as he meticulously planned his attempt to assassinate former president trump. what they still have yet to figure out is why. in the weeks leading up to donald trump's rally in butler, pennsylvania, on july 13th, the fbi says thomas crooks was scouring the internet for information on upcoming political events. >> in the 30 days prior to the attack, the subject conducted more than 60 searches related to president biden and former president trump. >> reporter: crooks was searching for information on both the republican and democratic national conventions. he also searched for details on the trump event, which took place close to where he lived.

the fbi describes crooks' planning as a, quote, sustained, detailed effort. initially, crooks' search history showed him looking for details around a wide range of political events, before zeroing in on the butler rally, which the fbi believes crooks viewed as a target of opportunity. they also believe he acted alone. >> i want to be clear. we have not seen any indication to suggest crooks was directed by a foreign entity to conduct the attack. >> reporter: but these discoveries have not provided much insight into crooks' motive. the content on his accounts displayed a, quote, mixture of ideologies. the investigators also shared photos of the collapsible barrel on the gun crooks used, as well as the backpack they found on site. they also showed the ac unit that he used to climb on the roof. they believe he spent a little more than six minutes on the roof before being killed by countersniper fire. >> right here! he's on the roof! >> reporter: the fbi probe is one of many investigations into the assassination attempt.

earlier this week, members of the bipartisan congressional task force toured the site in pennsylvania, promising to get to the bottom of what went wrong. >> i definitely took note today that there were a lot of lines of sight that appeared to have been unsecured that day that didn't have eyes on or that weren't secured and certainly, at this point, a lot more questions than answers. >> the fbi said to the allege's shooter's family is cooperating with their investigation, as is former president trump, who has already participated in an in-depth briefing. sheinelle? >> ryan, thank you. we turn now to some breaking news overnight from the middle east, where tensions are escalating once again there. israel pushing into day two of its military operation across the west bank, carrying out more raids and now saying that its forces have killed several members of a militant group there. nbc's matt bradley joins us now once again from tel aviv. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig.

well, that operation in the west bank is on going this morning. and it's likely to continue for a while. the idf is describing this as the first phase in what is increasingly looking like a new theater of war in their fight against militant groups. >> reporter: israel's raids on the west bank continuing this morning, including a strike on a mosque, killing five militants, as well as a prominent commander. the overall operation, the largest incursion into the occupied territory in over 20 years. with air strikes, armored vehicles, and earth movers, israeli officials saying it's a counterterror operation, targeting militants. the fighting intense. here, a sniper fires on a palestinian youth. the west bank can have a full-fledged war, who called for palestinians to evacuate. the raid focused on the northern west bank cities of janine, and the far-out refugee camp. the army raided the refugee camp with a large number of soldiers on foot, said this paramedic. they raided from different sides.

we were surprised. palestinian health authorities say at least 17 people have been killed. fighting in the west bank isn't new. more than 660 people have been killed there since hamas' october 7th attacks, according to palestinian health authorities. on the other side of israel and gaza, the war started after hamas' terror attacks continues. the world food program says this vehicle was shot up while approaching a check point, the group now temporarily suspending its operations in gaza, meaning there will be less food for people who desperately need it. but with violence intensifying in the west bank, there are concerns it could become the latest casualty of this war. >> and craig, that shooting of that world food program vehicle in the gaza strip is under review, says the idf. and those casualty numbers, we mentioned from the west bank, well, we're expecting those numbers to continue climbing. craig? >> matt bradley for us there in tel aviv. matt, thank you. now to the latest on the listeria outbreak stemming from

boar's head deli meets. according to the cdc, six more people have died and more than a dozen have been sickened across the country. that brings the total number of deaths to nine. 57 people have been hospitalized. in july, they recalled 7 million pounds of meat produced at its virginia facility after testing revealed some of the meat was contaminated with listeria. spacex launches are on hold after a booster rocket toppled over in flames while landing yesterday. the faa grounded the company's falcon-9 rockets and ordered an investigation following the accident. the rocket blasted off from cape canaveral and got all 21 starlink internet satellites to orbit. but the first stage booster fell over in a fireball moments after landing on an ocean platform. fortunately, no injuries were reported. all right. we have a lot to get to this morning, including the labor day travel rush. it is kicking into high gear this morning, with millions hitting the roads and skies for that last gasp of summer. and it's been a rough start as a

number of airports, including major delays with one flight forced to make an emergency landing after experiencing severe turbulence. we'll get to al's holiday weekend forecast in just a moment, but first, priscilla thompson is tracking the travel for us. good morning to you, priscilla. >> reporter: sheinelle, good morning. more than 880,000 people are expected to travel through houston's airports, starting today through this holiday weekend. and as you can see, some of these lines are already starting to grow. and this is just a snapshot of what we are expecting nationwide, over this busy and historic holiday weekend. and unfortunately for some, the headac headaches have already begun. overnight, travel troubles, just as the labor day crush begins. at denver international airport, a massive backup after officials say a mechanical issue shut down trains between concourses. >> you couldn't get on and you couldn't get off once you did get on. >> reporter: the delays spilling over to security check points, with passengers scrambling to get to their gates. there was also a serious scare

in the skies for some united airline fliers. >> we have a 737 aircraft coming in with 182 souls onboard. it has turbulence problems. >> reporter: a plane traveling from cancun to chicago suddenly hit with severe turbulence, forcing an emergency landing in memphis. >> we've got some passengers on the emergency aircraft possibly injured. >> reporter: at least seven people were hurt, officials say, with one of them hospitalized. it comes as united flight attendants say they're prepared to walk off the job. the union voting in favor of a strike for the first time in almost 20 years, demanding double-digit pay increases. picket lines formed at multiple airports, although no strike is likely soon. >> we don't want a strike, but what this group is saying is they're willing to do what it takes to get that industry-leading contract. >> reporter: in a statement, united says we remain eager to reach an agreement, while stressing, there is no work stoppage or labor disruption.

critical for what's expected to be a record-breaking holiday weekend for airlines. the tsa prepping the screen more than 17 million people over the next six days, with atlanta, chicago, and dallas among the nation's busiest airports. for those hitting the road, the earlier you can leave, the better. >> thursday and friday will be the busiest on the roads, especially in the afternoons. >> reporter: aaa says that leave early for that return trip, too. but if you're extending until tuesday, waiting it out may be better. a bit of good news for drivers, gas prices are down, compared to last year, about 50 cents a gallon, with the national average now $3.36. but the best advice? savor this last bit of summer. >> it's labor day. it's not thanksgiving, it's not christmas. it's okay. >> reporter: and this morning is off to a steady start with some delays, but fewer cancellations nationwide. but of course, this is only the start. sheinelle?

certainly followed for nearly two years now. >> a major hearing is taking place today to decide where the suspect in the idaho college murders will stand trial. nbc senior legal correspondent laura jarrett is here with the latest on this. laura, good morning. >> hey, guys, good morning. it has certainly been a long road for the victims' families here. but today could mark a major step forward as the judge hears arguments from both the prosecutors and the defense team on where this case should be heard. it's a decision that the defense says could influence the ultimate verdict. after months of back and forth, today, a judge in idaho will hear arguments over a key issue left unresolved, where the trial of bryan kohberger should happen. the accused killer of four university of idaho students is expected to attend today's hearing, as the judge weighs whether to keep the trial in latah county, where the crime took place. a county with roughly 40,000 residents to serve as the pool for potential jurors. or move it. some 300 miles away to boise.

specifically, ada county, with more than 500,000 residents, which would vastly expand the jury pool. something kohberger's defense has been pushing for. >> they shouldn't have a trial in this county. >> reporter: their argument, media coverage has tainted perspective jurors in moscow and all of latah county, pointing to a survey saying that 70% of respondents say they have already formed a guilty opinion. >> these are deeply held opinions in this community within this jury pool. >> reporter: but prosecutors have pushed to keep the proceedings where they are, arguing the extensive media coverage of the case is inescapable. >> i don't think that a change of venue is going to solve any of these problems. >> reporter: kohberger faces four charges of first degree murder for the fatal stabbings

of madison mogen, kaylee goncalves and ethan chapin of 2022. a judge entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf. the families of the victims say moving the trial would be a major hardship. >> it would be devastating for me. >> it's an insult. it would be an absolute insult. we are the victims and the crime happened here. >> still, staying in latah county could leave the door open for kohberger to appeal a potential guilty verdict. >> he could re-bring up that issue and saying the trial court errored by not allowing a change of venue, that the jurors were biased. >> laura, let's start there. we've been talking about the prospect of a change of venue for some time now. how important is that to this case? where the trial actually happened? >> it's important to the victims' families, as we just heard. obviously, they say they want to be there every day. it's important to the prosecutors. they want to show, hey, we can take on a big case like this, our town can handle it. but at the same time, they do not want to have this all get wiped away on appeal. and even though the victims' family perspective is huge here, what's most important is that bryan kohberger gets a fair trial. >> that's what i was going to ask you.

will the judge take the families' opinions into consideration? how much does that weigh, i guess? >> it doesn't seem like it's been a priority for him so far. remember, the house got torn down and there was very little objection to that. and i think that's why some of the victims' families feel like, hey, we still have a voice here. we're the ones who lost our kids. but in terms of the legal sort of arguments back and forth, his their perspective is really not what he'll be zeroing in on today. >> is this kind of change of venue motion standard operating procedure? >> yes, and they almost always fail, really, joe. but in this kind of case, given how small the county is, compared to boise, a much bigger jury pool, i think he has a chance. usually, they almost always fail. >> your insight -- >> i think he moves it. i think we might see it sometime soon thereafter, though >> our senior legal correspondent, laura jarrett. coming up, the growing concern over a surge in rare and dangerous viruses spread by mosquitos ahead of a big holiday

injuries are calling for more safety measures, anything that will prevent other families from feeling what they feel right now. >> reporter: for the families of samaj wilkins, cowen cratic, and four other teenage football players, unthinkable tragedy has upended their lives. all of their sons dying after playing football in just the last few weeks. west virginia's ryan cratic says his 13-year-old eighth grader, cowen, had only been playing organized football for about a year when he died from a head injury sustained during practice. was preventable? >> i think if he would have been wearing something like the guardian hat, it would have been a different outcome. >> reporter: guardian caps are soft shell helmet covers that the nfl has started to use in recent years in an effort to reduce head injuries, although their effectiveness is still unclear. but it's not just head injuries. samaj wilkins, a 14-year-old ninth grader collapsed during practice on a day that temperatures soared into the 90s. >> were you aware of any underlying health conditions that might have made him predisposed to something like

this? >> i was not aware of any of it. the only thing i was aware that he had was allergies, that's it. >> reporter: researchers say that football fatalities are rare, but last year, a study found 16 football players at the youth and college levels died, three from traumatic injuries directly related to football and ten indirect fatalities like sudden cardiac arrest and heatstroke. >> i think at the high school level, most of the safety regulations are guidelines. and i think we wouldn't be seeing these deaths if they were more widely enforced. >> reporter: neuro scientist dr. chris nowinski says at a bare minimum he wants to see a larger focus on avoiding certain practice habits. >> if you hear about a death in practice, that was avoidable. retrain coaches to teach kids how to play football without them getting in the head so much. >> reporter: an urgent plea echoed by parents hoping to

protect other young athletes. >> we do not need to wait. we do not need up with more child to lose their life. >> it is really important to note here there were three traumatic injuries. blunt force trauma, right in line with the ten-year annual average. if you can believe that, about 3.5 a year. those indirect death we just told you about occur roughly three times as often. >> this strikes a nerve for people all around the country. so many of our kids play sports, football, soccer, what have you. what are some specific recommendations that experts have to reduce these kinds of deaths? >> the study that we referenced had a lot of different suggestions. let's start with the most obvious. that heat-stroke related deaths should not happen. period. they are preventable. all schools should have an understanding of best practices, bringing down body core, body temperature and avoiding unnecessary risks when it concerns head injury, guys, teaching tackling the right way. blocking and tackling, which is to say, keep heads away from that sort of procedure, like? we all know the bases of this,

anyone in the world, they're going to say, that's reagan. and i didn't want to do an impersonation. i wanted to get to the human being behind the public persona. and so i went up, got invited to the reagan ranch, which is not open to the public. his friends bought it after his passing, they left it exactly as it was. their clothes are still in the closet, in fact. and coming through the gates, i could feel him there. i mean, the house they had, it was 1,100 square feet, barely you know, a two-bedroom apartment. and they had a king-sized bed, but it was two single beds zip tied together. reagan was not a rich man, i realized. he was a very humble man. and that's what led me into it. >> i think we've got a side by side of you and the late president, as well, because i want to show, again, you really captured the likeness. what about the voice, dennis. how did you nail that? were you walking around the house -- >> i had two years to prepare,

basically. yeah, my poor kids lived with ronald reagan at different times of his life for a couple of years. but i wanted to learn it and forget it. youtube is fantastic as far as a source for that. but i just wanted to forget it so we could do these scenes. and then i had penelope ann miller playing nancy and she's so good -- she just was nancy, even in the lunch line. >> as you said, she was in character as well for most of the filming. even when she was not actually being filmed. >> yeah, she's such an incredible actress. and at the core, the movie is a love story of ron and nancy and their marriage over five, six decades. and there wouldn't have been a president reagan without nancy. >> and it's also told through -- not to give away too much, but it's told through the eyes of a former kgb spy who's played by jon voight, as well.

i mean, you know, these are interesting times, politically, in which we find ourselves. was there any reluctance to do a movie like this right now? and then to release that movie just a few weeks before what's going to be a hotly contested presidential election? >> no, we made it during covid, it was 2020. and we meant to come out in '22. i had one caveat, i just wanted to make sure that we did not come out in an election year, because i just didn't want it to get lost in the melee, but here it is, come out in an election year, and the response to it has been incredible. and so i have to say, what do i know? >> yeah. >> and we have had some bumps in the road. things like facebook has been, for some reason banning and censoring our advertising and promotion on it. and -- which is very interesting, i think, you know, because they said we were trying to influence an election. >> i was going to ask you about that.

somewhere that isn't new york. it was very cool. very lucky. >> from production assistant to pop-ups in copenhagen. >> let's start here. this is going to be a little pasta salad you're making. >> you know my whole goal is to create healthy recipes that are easy to make but also really delicious and decadent, so you don't feel like you're come promiezing on flavor. this is a tahini caesar pasta salad. my tip is to use tahini to make the caesar dressing. it makes it really simple and healthy. sesame seed paste, same consistency as peanut butter, we start with that, gives a nice creamy dressing, some olive oil. craig, if you want to add some lemon juice, because you're my sous chef today. i don't know if you knew that, but now you know. a little bit of garlic. that's some water. after we season with a little bit of salt and pepper, then this is going to -- everyone is chuckling. >> that was a very sheinelle thing of you to do. >> thought it might have been vinegar. >> oh, no, no.

we'll just mix this up. just add a little water to achieve this nice, creamy consistency. >> just a little splash. that's perfect. you don't want it too be too runny, that won't get that caesar dressing. once you have this nice creamy dressing, i'll work on what i like to call my cheesy cashew bread crumbs. this is a fun way to create a bread crumb, but from a cashew. this is by the way a great ghuten free alternative. i was thinking about cal when i was thinking about this recipe this morning. so raw, unsalted cashews, simple, basic. now, we're going to add some nutritional yeast, and while it doesn't sound like the cutest thing ever -- it's very great. >> i'll go a little faster. >> let's keep going. this is zatar, garlic powder, a little bit of salt. mix that up and you'll get this nice little bread crumb situation here. >> then we just build it. for our add-ins, we have our pasta, add some tomato. these are so beautiful right now. adds that nice pop of sweetness. massage your kale, always.
